Monday Musings – August 10, 2015

Dear Friends,

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of adoption.  When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”  Romans 8:15-16

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.”  I John 4:18

Every year Willow Creek Community Church (South Barrington, Illinois) holds a Global Leadership Summit.  It’s a big church.  They seat 7,000 in their worship center. But years ago they realized way more people wanted to attend this event that they could accommodate on site.  So they started with a few satellite link sites.  Now quite a few.  240,000 people all over the world experienced the Global Leadership Summit last week.  Among them were Danny Jacobsen, Joel Willis, and me.  (Our Sage District generously helped pay our registration fee.)

Bill Hybels is the senior pastor at Willow Creek.  I have been one of his many admirers for a number of years.  He did an incredibly brave thing at the Leadership Summit this year.  He shared that he has been struggling with fear in his personal life.  He said he has never been a fearful person.  This caught him by surprise.  It was getting in the way of his responsibilities to his family and to his church.  It was crippling his life.  Nothing seemed to help. Until he found a song.  He now listens to this song several times each day.  It is part of him.  And his fear has melted away.

I have given you a link to the song below.  It may not be your style of music.  I encourage you to give it a try.  I have to tell you, I can’t get enough of this song.  I’ll be interested to hear what you think of it.

Here are the lyrics:

You unravel me, with a melody.  You surround me with a song.

Of deliverance from my enemies, till all my fears are gone.

I’m no longer a slave to fear.  I am a child of God.

From my mother’s womb, you have chosen me.

Love has called my name.

I’ve been born again, into your family.  Love flows through my veins.

I’m no longer a slave to fear.  I am a child of God.

You split the sea so I could walk right through it.

All my fears were drowned in perfect love.

You rescued me so I could stand and sing, I am a child of God.

In Christ,
