Monday Musings – January 22, 2013

Dear Friends,

It’s 3 degrees right now in Nampa.  Today’s high is forecast to be 18. Tomorrow morning it will again be near zero.  Pretty much like it has been ever since Christmas.  Want some encouraging news?  Pitchers and catchers report for spring training on February 11.  That’s only 19 days away!  This long, cold winter will not last forever!!

Ernie Harwell is one of the great radio broadcasters of all time.  He had the distinction of once being traded for a player, the only time that has ever happened!  He broadcast baseball for 55 years, 42 of them with the Detroit Tigers.  He was a devout Christian who had the trademark of reading from the Bible on his first broadcast of the year.  It would almost certainly be a cold day.  Baseball starts cold and ends cold (ending now in November).  In between are the hottest months of the year.  Ernie Harwell would open the baseball season each year by reading from the Song of Solomon.

For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing bird is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land. (2:11-12)

I’m ready.  How about you?

In Christ,

John
