There is a lot of excitement around church as Vacation Bible School begins this morning. I’m missing this first day as I’m on the road returning from Annual Conference. One of many highlights from Annual Conference was a presentation from Brian McLaren, one of the pioneers in finding new ways to reach new and younger people with the timeless good news of Jesus. One nugget he shared relates to Vacation Bible School. It relates to everything we do to extend the mission of our church. It all takes TIME.
TIME for Brian McLaren is an acronym. It stands for Time, Intelligence, Money, and Effort, Vacation Bible School has taken plenty of each of these four. Brian McLaren pointed out that if you don’t have all four, it takes more of the other three. For example, if you are in a big hurry and don’t have much Time, you’ll have to be smarter (Intelligence), better funded (Money), and try harder (Effort). If you are lacking in Intelligence, it’s going to take more Time, more Money, and more Effort. If it is Money that is lacking, it’s going to take more Time, more Effort, and require more Intelligence. And if you aren’t willing to put in much Effort, you’ll need extra Time, Money, and Intelligence.
And Brian McLaren pointed out that younger people typically have little Money they can contribute. Hence, they invest even more Time, Intelligence, and Effort. That makes them extra susceptible to burn-out.
The good news is, God has given us all four. Vacation Bible School is a prime example. I know it’s going to be a great week and I can’t wait to get home to be a part of it.
